Airport Revival Team Embarks On Its Work
Kenya - The Nation
Nairobi, -- A team picked by President Kibaki last month to find ways of
promoting the Eldoret International Airport starts its work today.
The 15-man committee is headed by the Permanent Secretary in the
ministry of Transport and Communications, Mr Gerrishon Ikiara. It is
expected to tour the Sh2.5 billion airport this morning to establish its
business potential.
Committee members will tour the airport from 9am, before holding a brief
meeting.
We will tour the airport in the morning and hold a meeting at Hotel
Sirikwa with various stakeholders from Western Kenya, who will suggest
ways of reviving business at the airport, Mr Mark Too, a member of the
team, said.
Speaking on telephone, Mr Too said the committee has invited leading
industrialists and players in the cereals, tea, sugar, cotton,
horticultural and fish farming sectors to the meeting. Leading athletes
have also been invited to the meeting.
President Kibaki appointed the committee on April 26 to identify the
constraints facing the airport and explore the possibilities of
establishing an export processing zone near it.
The team, which will also recommend ways to improve passenger and cargo
business, is expected to submit its report in three months.
The airport, the third largest in Kenya, is yet to start posting profits
seven years after it became operational.
Former President Daniel arap Moi opened the facility in 1997, two years
after construction work started.
