Holtman helping launch retail at BWI
By Marguerite Higgins
THE WASHINGTON (DC) TIMES

Brian Holtman signed on to a team that is getting the retail operations
at Baltimore-Washington International Airport off the ground.

Mr. Holtman, 26, is the newest retail operations executive with BAA
Maryland Inc., a subsidiary of BAA USA Inc.

BAA Maryland last month won a 10-year contract from the Maryland
Aviation Administration to develop and manage nearly 141,000 square feet
of food, retail and service space at the airport.

BWI serves 19 million passengers annually and is undergoing a $1.8
billion expansion.

Mr. Holtman is part of the development team with seven other staff
members who are making sure that the retailers are complying with their
leases and staying on top of customer service.

"I basically act as a liaison between the businesses and management,"
Mr. Holtman said.

BAA Maryland is in the transition phase of taking over BWI's retail from
HMSHost, he said.

Mr. Holtman, who has been on the job since April 4, has been setting up
BAA Maryland's office in the main terminal at BWI and meeting with the
airport's tenants.

Once operations are up and running, Mr. Holtman will be monitoring
customer service, performance, staffing and quality standards at BWI
shops.

He comes to BAA Maryland from W.C. & A.N. Miller Cos., a D.C.
real-estate firm, where he served for five months as communications
coordinator.

Mr. Holtman said he couldn't pass up the opportunity to work in an
airport again, when BAA USA approached him with the position.

"I enjoy every aspect of this business and the fact that it is an
ever-changing environment," he said.

Prior to W.C. & A.N. Miller Cos. and a shorter stint at Alexandria
political consulting firm Sandler-Innocenzi, Mr. Holtman spent 16 months
at Pittsburgh International Airport.

He worked his way from an intern at the Allegheny County Airport
Authority, which runs the Pittsburgh airport and the smaller Allegheny
County Airport, to public-relations coordinator before being laid off
last June.

BAA USA, which runs the mall at the Pittsburgh airport, hired Mr.
Holtman because of his experience with airports and real estate, said
Mark Knight, vice president and regional director.

"Everybody on this management team is critical. We felt Brian had a
strong background to work with our tenants, the backbone of the
operation, on a day-to-day basis," Mr. Knight said.

Mr. Holtman lives in Columbia, Md.
