Jetstar might just fly into Canberra yet
Canberra City News, Australia

Jetstar Airlines could begin its operations from
Canberra in August this year, if it accepts the
multi-million dollar incentives offered by Capital
Airport Group (CAG).
Although CAG was hoping Jetstar would include Canberra
in its route from as early as next month, meetings up
to now have proved fruitless.

CAG Manager of Aeronautical Business, Matthew Brown,
has been in negotiations with Jetstar since September
last year in an attempt to replicate the success the
airport has had in similar deals with Virgin and
Qantas.

He believes Jetstar, which is currently using former
Impulse Airline Boeing 717s, will consider coming to
the table when it receives its first new fleet in
August.

"That’s when the opportunity for us to get in there to
talk seriously presents itself," he said.

However Mr Brown is hoping to meet with the airline in
the next few weeks to further discuss CAG’s plans.

CAG’s sweeteners to other airlines have resulted in
Virgin commencing its Canberra to Gold Coast route in
September last year, and Qantas launching its flights
to Perth in February.

Existing airlines in the national capital are unlikely
to be threatened if Jetstar does enter the Canberra
market because it would only be offering leisure
routes, including SE Queensland, far north Queensland
and Tasmania.
