Colorado Springs tries to get discount airlines to the
airport
KOAA, CO

>From a $5-million expansion project to plans for road
improvements to the airport, Colorado Springs is
taking big steps to lure discount airlines here. Mayor
Lionel Rivera met with one a few weeks ago, to try and
market Colorado Springs as a future expansion point.

The airport is expanding the main terminal area,
improving the restaurant and the gift shop. Access the
airport, potential business and infrastructure are all
key factors for wooing a discount carrier here.

Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera explains, "One of
the things that we showed the airline when we were
visiting, is how many people not only live in El Paso
County, but if you just extend that radius about 35
miles, then you have about 900,000 people that you can
attract."

Price is the biggest factor people use in determining
which airport they'll use. If current carriers won't
lower fares, the only way to cut costs is to bring a
discount carrier here.
