Expansion is planned for airport
BBC News, UK
Plans are being drawn up for a major expansion of
Teesside Airport.
A masterplan is being prepared to develop the airport
site which would include improving and enlarging the
existing terminal building.
The airport has been working with the Government and
expects to be dealing with around four million
passengers a year by 2030.
A number of improvements are already under way
including a £2m road to improve access to the airport.
Airport business services manager John Waiting: "It is
to enlarge and improve the existing facility.
Employment opportunities
"We have started to prepare a masterplan to develop
the airport, not only in respect of air services or
the terminal, but the site as a whole."
Mr Waiting said they had been working with the
Government following its white paper on the future for
air travel.
He said: "The existing terminal can certainly satisfy
our needs for the next couple of years with our
planned growth but after that we need to improve and
enlarge the existing facility."
Work already being done includes the new access road
to the airport, a new terminal front road and
improvements to the car park and departure lounge.
Mr Waiting said the work would see construction jobs
being created and there would also be future
employment opportunities at the airport.
He said the work on the terminal would probably be two
or three years away.
