Handover/Acceptance of Mostar Airport
FENA, Bosnia and Herzegovina

MOSTAR, Mar 22 (FENA) – As of April 1 the Mostar
International Airport passes from the authority of the
SFOR air force to the authority of the City of Mostar
and the Federal Directorate for Civilian Aviation.

Today the SFOR, under whose authority the Airport had
been since July 1998, handed the Airport over to
civilian authorities. The first of April is important
for BiH for another reason: On this day, hoisting its
flag on the mast in front of the ‘Eurocontrol’ in
Brussels BiH will become the 34th European member
country of the ‘Eurocontrol’ – said the BiH minister
of transport and communications Branko Dokić.

He said that one tragic event – the crush of the
Macedonian president Boris Trajkovski’s plane – can in
no way be related with the professionally done job by
SFOR, especially not so before the commission set up
by the relevant state ministry has examined all the
details of the cause of this misfortune.

He thanked OHR who have contributed to the passage of
a modern law on civilian aviation and the SFOR
controllers for a professionally done job and for
creating conditions for BiH controllers to acquire
necessary practice and training enabling them to take
over. Minister Dokić also thanked international
organisations, in the first place the European
Commission which has made much effort in the recent
period in creating conditions for BiH authorities to
take over the control of the Mostar Airport.

The SFOR commander, major general Virgill Packet,
concluded that this is a good example of progress in
Mostar, adding that the Airport could be an example of
future ambitions of the City.
