BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Millions of dollars will go toward
helping one community move.
Rep. Artur Davis announced today over $4 million will
be used to acquire land near the Birmingham
International Airport.
The funding will go toward purchasing homes and
relocating people living in areas where noise from
planes overhead is a nuisance. This includes people
living in parts of Rosalind Heights and the Zion
communities.
But after the announcement, many weren't satisfied.
Some said they didn't think the funding would cover
all the expenses of moving. Others worry that this
would have major negative consequences on the city of
Birmingham.
"When they move out of the city, we lose population.
When we lose population, we lose federal funding,"
said Richard Rutledge, president of the South Roebuck
Springs Neighborhood Association. "To be honest with
you, we can't afford to lose any more federal funding
for our schools, for our infrastructure repair and the
like."
The funding for the moves is coming the U.S.
Department of Transportation.
