Low Fares Fly at Tallahassee Airport
The Tallahassee Democrat, FL
Tallahassee Regional Airport continues to provide the
lowest average airfare in a survey of 10 regional
airports, officials said Monday.
"It's obvious things are going very well, not only in
terms of service but in prices as well," said Bill
Behenna, public information manager for the city of
Tallahassee.
Behenna said it was the seventh straight quarter
Tallahassee Regional had recorded the lowest average
fare.
The latest survey was for the third quarter of 2003.
The survey began in the first quarter of 2002.
BACK Aviation Consultants, a consulting firm used by
the airport, gathers fare information from nearby
regional airports and of those in capital cities such
as Atlanta and Jackson, Miss.
The average fare at Tallahassee Regional was $138.57.
Jacksonville placed second with $140.45 and Atlanta
third with an average of $148.47.
The highest fares were recorded at three other cities
- Valdosta, Ga. ($212.04), Dothan, Ala. ($223.79) and
Albany, Ga. ($236.43).
"This data is particularly encouraging as it shows
that Tallahassee's average airfares have remained low
since AirTran's entry into the Tallahassee market in
2001," said Phil Inglese, airport finance and
administrative manager.
"That's what happens when we come into market space,"
said Tad Hutcheson, director of marketing for AirTran.
AirTran has four departures and four arrivals daily at
Tallahassee Regional. The airline discontinued a
one-stop flight to Miami through Tampa from
Tallahassee Jan. 31.
Since AirTran's entry in 2001, Northwest Airlines and
Delta have lowered fares on some flights.
Inglese said another low-cost carrier, Continental
Express, will begin service in Tallahassee later this
month.
Tallahassee Regional averages a total of 80 departures
and arrivals each day and nonstop service to such
major cities as Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Fort
Lauderdale, Memphis and Tampa.
