India News: Ahmedabad Airport to Be Developed on Lines
of Singapore's Changi
Keralanext, India
Ahmedabad, The Sardar Patel International Airport here
will be developed on the lines of Singapore's Changi
Airport at a cost of Rs.1 billion, official sources
said. Civil Aviation Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy has
informed Chief Minister Narendra Modi that the central
government has given its clearance for the project, a
state government statement said.
The civil aviation ministry has selected a design
modelled on Changi airport, rated as one of the best
airports in the world, for the project. The design was
submitted by CPG Consultants, the firm that designed
the Changi airport, official sources said.
Engineers India Ltd and Kothari Associates are CPG's
partners in the project.
"Changi Airport is internationally acknowledged to be
the ideal architectural model and the Ahmedabad
airport is going to be developed on that model. A new
terminal will come up on 24,000 square metres," the
statement said.
A committee headed by Civil Aviation Secretary K. Roy
Paul selected the design. The panel included
specialists and officials of the Airports Authority of
India.
The CPG design won the vote over five other
short-listed models. The selection was done on the
basis of rules laid down by the Council of
Architecture.
The progress in the project to upgrade Ahmedabad
airport is significant as the Delhi and Mumbai airport
modernisation projects are awaiting the design
selection stage.
The government plans to modernise and upgrade several
airports in state capitals, including Chennai,
Kolkata, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram using the same
model.
The statement listed a few more achievements of the
Gujarat government in the past week.
Rajasthan, one of the beneficiaries of the Sardar
Sarovar project, the ambitious plan to build a
multi-purpose dam on the river Narmada, has paid
Rs.1.57 billion of its long-standing dues to Gujarat.
"Rajasthan Chief Minister (Vasundhara Raje) delivered
on Sunday a draft of Rs.1.57 billion for its dues to
Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam (the executing agency for
the project)," the statement said.
