Airport Noise Too Loud, Says Delta
CBC British Columbia, Canada
VANCOUVER - Officials at Delta city hall want
Vancouver International Airport to establish a
noise-monitoring station in South Delta because of an
increasing number of complaints about late-night plane
noise.
Delta councillor Krista Engelland says people
regularly stop her on the street – angry about
airplane noise.
A resident of South Delta herself, Engelland says she
often can't get through the night without hearing
planes roaring overhead.
"Particularly the Dash 8 plane," she says. "They have
quite a distinctive sound and they do wake me up.
"The jets flying out of YVR in the early morning and
late evening wake me up as well," says the councillor.
But an environmental specialist at the airport says
there hasn't been a significant change in flights over
the last year.
"In general we've actually had fewer aircraft landings
and takeoffs last year than in previous years," says
Anne Murray. "I'm not aware of any new routings.
"Sometimes it depends on weather patterns, and
sometimes people notice noise at different times,"
says Murray.
She also notes that air traffic controllers try to
avoid flying planes over built-up residential areas
whenever possible.
