The under-utilised airport in Akure, Ondo State, would
commence domestic flights from next week nineteen
years after it was commissioned.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation, Mallam
Yisa Yuguda who was in the state to assess the
facilities available at the airport.

He said it was unfortunate that the airport which can
successfully take-off and land aircraft was not
patronised by aviation operators.

Already, an operator of medium aircraft has been
licenced by the Ministry of Aviation to operate daily,
Akure-Abuja flights, while the operations will be
extended to other parts of the country soon.

Speaking during the courtesy call on the
Deputy-Governor, Omolade Oluwateru after the facility
tour, Yuguda assured that everything had been made to
commence flight by February 23.

He said that he was in the state as part of efforts to
revamp moribund airports,s adding that the airport
will breathe a new lease of life to the socio-economic
sector of the state.

"The airport is very dear to us. It has all the
facilities to take off and land aircraft but
unfortunately, it has not been well patronised by
aviation operators."

"I believe the people of Ondo State need the
facilities. President Obasanjo directed that we revive
all airports, that is, get the right aircraft that can
fly those routes and we are working on that."

Responding, Oluwateru said the government will give
adequate support and patronage to assist the
commencement of operation at the Akure airport.
