British Airport Authority Avoids Server Turbulence
with AppSense

WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 2004--
AppSense to Enhance IT Security and Performance at
World's Busiest International Airport in Deal Worth up
to $940,000 Over Five Years

AppSense, a global leader in application performance
management, today announced that leading airports
operator British Airports Authority (BAA) has
purchased 10,000 licenses for AppSense Application
Manager and AppSense Performance Manager products in a
deal that could be worth up to $940,000 (GBP500,000)
over five years.

As part of its move to a server-based computing
architecture, BAA chose AppSense to maximize
performance and eliminate rogue applications from its
IT environment. AppSense will increase security levels
for more than 100 in-house and off-the-shelf
applications used for everyday business functions such
as finance, HR, logistics, security and IT. BAA will
roll out AppSense across its seven United Kingdom
airports in a phased program, starting with Gatwick
and Heathrow, the world's busiest international
airport.

"Security and performance are among the key drivers
for BAA's change to a server-based architecture," said
Richard Rundle, director of IT at BAA. "The AppSense
products will enable BAA to use its IT infrastructure
more effectively."

AppSense Application Manager will intercept all
user-introduced executables and script content for
BAA, guaranteeing greater levels of security and
ensuring that system resources are reserved for
authorized applications. AppSense Performance Manager
will be used to improve processor usage and control
the amount of memory allocated to individual users,
resulting in consistent performance delivery,
particularly at peak times.

"Getting the best performance from their IT
environment is critical for BAA so they can meet the
levels of service expected by their business users,
particularly during busy periods. By optimizing server
performance and preventing access to user-introduced
executables and script content, BAA can get
considerably more out of its existing infrastructure
and ensure that IT works seamlessly to support its
main business functions," said Anthony Bolland,
AppSense CEO. "BAA's decision to choose AppSense
confirms our leadership in application performance
management for server-based computing environments."

The deal follows two successful pilot phases, during
which BAA deployed AppSense Application Manager and
AppSense Performance Manager to a business unit of
around 500 users with responsibility for the
development of Heathrow's Terminal 5, and to 300 other
operational employees at Heathrow.

Application Manager and Performance Manager are
components of the AppSense Performance Suite, the
first-ever integrated set of products dedicated to
solving the performance problems of server-based
computing applications. AppSense Performance Suite
provides IT professionals with proactive control of
the performance of server-based applications. The
suite manages all aspects of the system that could
cause degradation in performance, including processor
usage, memory allocation and elimination of rogue
applications. The products include AppSense's patented
"thread throttling" technology, which dynamically
"clamps" excessive application tasks to ensure a
consistent performance experience for all users by
forcibly restricting the processor and memory occupied
by the task. AppSense Performance Suite integrates all
AppSense products, including Performance Manager,
Application Manager, Optimizer and Server-based
Toolkit, to deliver a single control point for
performance management, auditing and automated
intervention.

AppSense Performance Suite is ideal for managing the
performance of applications running in server-based
environments such as the Citrix MetaFrame(R) Access
Suite or Microsoft Windows Terminal Services. AppSense
Performance Suite also supports the management of
emerging Web Services applications.
