Opposition to Commercial Airport at Whenuapai
Opposition to Commercial Airport

Feb 18, 2004
Submissions on the future of Whenuapai airbase in
Auckland are strongly against a proposal to turn it
into a commercial airport.
The Defence Force released the results of submissions
on preferred options for the 300-hectare base when the
Air Force moves out within five years. It says three
quarters of respondents are against turning it into a
commercial airport, with most residents wanting to use
it for rural residential development. More than 2,000
submissions were made - the majority came from people
living near the base.
There are four main options for the future of the
airbase, an airport, an urban development, industrial
development or rural residential blocks.
Some 57% of submissions supported Whenuapai becoming a
rural residential area while 21% wanted to turn the
base into a commercial airport.
Whenuapai covers 300 hectares of prime land near the
upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour.
The Defence Force is to report its recommendations to
the government at the end of march.
