Fujairah International Airport's passenger check-in
counters are being increased to 12 under a major
expansion project, said a report.

The airport has only three such counters at present.

"By the end of this year, we will have a new look,
bigger space, better facilities," airport general
manager Khaled Al Mazroui said.

He said 40 per cent of the airport construction work
had already been completed.

"We aiming to be one of the most attractive airports
in the region in terms of ensuring more comfort and
efficiency for passengers," he said in remarks
published in the Gulf News.

The expansion project will boost the airport's new
facilities and services, increase cargo and passenger
traffic and establish it as a major staging point
between East and West.

Khaled Al Mazroui said the expansion project was
necessary to allow the airport to cope with the
remarkable increase in traffic.

"We started expanding the airport's facilities and
buildings last March, aiming to ensure more
accessability and comfort for our passengers," Al
Mazroui said.

Two big annexes are being built on both sides of the
main airport building to increase passenger handling
capacity.

There will be 12 passenger check-in counters instead
of the present three, which would help facilitate
completing passengers' travelling procedures.

"The new building will have three main entrances
instead of two. The arrival hall in the main building
will be extended to be able to handle passengers'
entry formalities of three flights at the same time
who will receive flexible and fast process," said Al
Mazroui.

It will also have several restaurants in the departure
hall, in addition to increasing the total space
dedicated for the airport's duty free by four times.

It will also have several new automatically-lighted
flight schedule panels and new offices for the
airport's administrative staff, passports checking
personnel and customs clearance staff.

"The new airport will be able to receive around 8,000
passengers, while the current premises is capable of
handling transactions for not more than 600
passengers.

"VIP and business class passenges will also be
received at a new and bigger hall and to be provided
with the best services," he said.

"The airport will offer competitive charges for
aircraft landing and parking operations compared to
other airports in the region. It will provide airlines
and shipping traders an easy access and more
flexibility," Al Mazroui added.

The Fujairah Department of Civil Aviation set a
two-year plan after signing a contract with a British
company to conduct several studies at the airport to
calculate the level of services and facilities the
airport will offer after completion of the expansion
project.
