Frankfurt Airport Has Record January
Airwise
German airport operator Fraport posted record January
passenger numbers on Thursday thanks to strong demand
for long-haul winter vacations and also notched up
robust growth in airfreight.
"The boom in long-haul travel, which German tour
operators reported for the winter season, is reflected
in January's passenger figures," Fraport said in a
statement, noting that destinations such as Egypt, the
Dominican Republic, Mexico and Sri Lanka had seen
double-digit growth.
January passenger numbers at Frankfurt Airport --
continental Europe's largest passenger and cargo hub
-- rose 2.3 percent to 3.6 million. Air freight
traffic was up 3.6 percent at 114,817 tonnes, also the
best January figure in the airport's history.
Fraport said last month it had met its core profit
goal for 2003 and said full-year passengers declined
0.2 percent to 48.4 million.
It said in November it expected 2004 sales to grow by
five percent and earnings before interest, tax,
depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to rise by five
to 10 percent.
