MBS Airport Manager to Call It a Day
ABC12.com, MI

Freeland — (02/12/04)--An instrumental leader in the
local community is calling it quits. After more than
three decades at MBS International Airport, Airport
Manager Betty Owen has now decided to call it quits.

Thursday was Owen's last day on the job. ABC12' s Joel
Doepker had more. Betty Owen has seen many things in
her time at the airport. She's met every president
since Richard Nixon, and is instrumental in the
airport's past, present and future.

Betty Owen has seen the transformation at MBS Airport.
Starting as a bookkeeper at 19 years old, she's made
her way up to airport manager, and has been in charge
since 1989.

With her leadership, the airport is able to be self
sufficient with no subsidies. She was able to pay off
its debt early, and has doubled the airport's assets
she she took over to a solid $44 million.

Instrumental in its growth and modernization, Betty is
leaving at a time when the airport is planning for its
future. In the next 10 years, there are plans to tear
down the old terminal and build a brand-new one. She
wants the assistant airport manager to be in charge of
that planning.

Betty will spend some time at her cottage in northern
Michigan before looking forward to her hobby: training
dogs. Over the years, Betty has always been great to
us at ABC12 News. We wish her well.
