Central Japan International Airport to Offer Lower Landing Fees

New Airport to Offer Lower Landing Fees
Japan Times, Japan
NAGOYA (Kyodo) The operator of Central Japan
International Airport plans to charge lower landing
fees than those at Narita airport and Kansai
International Airport to attract more airlines and
regular flights.
Officials at Central Japan International Airport Co.
said the landing fee for a Boeing 747-400 would be
around 700,000 yen, compared with 950,000 yen at
Narita and 830,000 yen at Kansai international.
The floating airport is due to open in February 2005
near Nagoya.
It will submit the landing fees and other terms for
use of the airport to the International Air Transport
Association shortly.
The cheaper landing fees have been made possible by
efforts to reduce the cost of building the airport,
officials said.
CJIA, headed by former Toyota Motor Corp. executive
Yukihisa Hirano, has reduced total construction costs
from the initially planned 768 billion yen to around
640 billion yen.
The landing fees at the new airport, Japan's third
major international gateway after Narita and Kansai,
are still higher than the charges at other major
international airports around the world.
Some economists believe it is possible that the IATA
will call on the operator to further reduce the fees
during upcoming negotiations.
The airport will have a 3.5 km runway and operate
around the clock.
