2,000 Airport Workers Sacked

BARELY few months after a major shake-up in
parastatals in the Aviation Ministry swept away
several top shots, over 2,000 workers of the three
main parastatals were yesterday sacked in a fresh
tempest.
The sack which cut across all categories, including
managers, is said to be part of the on-going
restructuring expected to sanitise the civil service.
Breakdown of the affected staff showed that at the
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), about 40
per cent of its over 4,000 workforce was affected.
Some of the 153 staff laid off at the Nigerian Civil
Aviation Authority (NCAA) were given their sack
letters yesterday. At least 100 workers were also said
to be affected by the down sizing/restructuring
exercise at the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency
(NAMA).
In a two-page statement signed by Mr Sam Adurogboye,
for NCAA's Director-General Mr Fidelis Onyeyiri,
redundancy, indiscipline, ill-health and length of
service were listed as some of the criteria for the
retrenchment.
The statement confirmed the figure of those sacked at
the parastatal as 153, representing 18.3 per cent of
the entire workforce at NCAA.
"It is also noteworthy that no staff was dismissed,
rather the affected officers were either retired or
have their appointments terminated," the statement
added.
The NCAA management which met with the in-house
workers' union leaders yesterday to brief them on the
development, according to Adurogboye, assured those
retired of their benefits within 30 working days.
The parastal's management also promised to pay others
one month salary in lieu of notice, and three months
for those who had served for at least 10 years, in
line with labour laws.
It would be recalled that government late last year
sacked FAAN Managing Director Mr Mamman Ibrahim, and
replaced him with Alhaji Mohammed Sanni Baba. The
General Managers also placed on suspension then were
yet to be recalled till date.
Similar re-organisation at NCAA affected its Director
General, Mr Ephraim Onyudo, which brought in Mr
Onyeyiri.
