Airport Officials to Address Overcrowded Waiting Areas

Overcrowded waiting areas in the Tucson International
Airport are causing concern among airport officials
and visitors, and may prompt another big expansion
project for the airport.
After the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, people
without tickets were banned from the airport
concourses. Since people can no longer go to the
airline gates to greet passengers, they crowd into
areas near the security checkpoints.
Those areas were not designed to hold a lot of people,
and the Tucson Airport Authority’s board of directors
is scheduled to address the problem at its Tuesday
meeting.
The board will consider hiring a consultant to design
improvements that would give people more breathing
room. Construction may start next year. “We need a
nicer and more acceptable area for our meeters and
greeters,” said Suzanne McLean, vice president of
planning and development for the Tucson Airport
Authority.
She said the security checkpoints, in addition to the
waiting areas, will probably need to be expanded to
handle more passengers in the future. "Those are the
two areas we absolutely have to target," McLean said.
