Onorato Sizes Up Pittsburgh International Airport

Onorato Sizes Up Airport
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, PA

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

Girding for the possible demise of US Airways,
Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato said
Monday he has approached congressional leaders about
making more of Pittsburgh International Airport
available for military use.

Onorato also said during an interview with the
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the county has talked
to discount airline JetBlue about locating a base at
Pittsburgh International for its Northeast operations.

"The biggest question right now is: Will US Airways
survive as a company? They haven't fixed their
problems," he said. "They could disappear from here,
whether from an asset sale or a liquidation."

US Airways last week slashed its commitment to
Pittsburgh. The airline agreed to lease only 10
mainline jet gates -- not the former 50 -- until 2018.
The other 40 gates, along with 22 commuter plane
gates, are now leased on a monthly basis.
