Davie Keeping Current on Airport Expansion Plans

DAVIE · Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport probably will be
expanded in the near future, and members of the Town Council want to make sure
their community is not hurt by the project.

Broward County Commissioner Lori Parrish, who represents western Davie,
recently made a presentation to the Town Council on the county's efforts to
build a second major runway on the south side of the airport.

Vice Mayor Susan Starkey said it was important for Davie to have current
information on the airport project.

"She [Parrish] told us there will be some type of expansion and that we need to
decide where to take it," Starkey said. "We really need to review the analysis
and to make sure this decision is based on sound business practices.

"We want to ensure that the quality of life is considered," Starkey said. "We
need to look at quality-of-life issues and balance them with growth and
development."

In speaking to council members, Parrish discussed a study of the various
airport expansion proposals and some of the effects those plans could have on
surrounding communities.

Parrish talked about the need for airport development and some of the problems
that county planners are wrestling with.

Some expansion proposals, she said, would require the demolition of expensive
waterfront homes. If the county decides to use its right to acquire property
through condemnation proceedings, it would have to pay large sums of money to
the owners of those homes.

Davie officials have been assured that they will be consulted during the
county's planning process, which is why they are reviewing how the airport's
expansion would affect the town.

"We need to look at what is in the best interest of Davie," Starkey said. "We
need to look at the best alternatives for the runway."

Mayor Tom Truex said he was pleased with Parrish's presentation.

"It sounds like a step in the right direction, but now I need to sit down and
study the report," he said.
