Montreal—The city's main airport officially took on a new name yesterday —
Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

Workers have already mounted a sign bearing the name in front of the airport,
which had been called Dorval Airport, after the town that surrounds it, since
it opened in 1954. Ottawa announced in September it would change the name to
honour Canada's 15th prime minister. Trudeau died Sept. 28, 2000.

The name change has angered some Quebec separatists, who have spent the last
two months lobbying Ottawa to reverse the decision.

"This name is unacceptable," said Gilles Rhéaume, a long-time separatist. "You
don't give the name of a public airport to a leader who imprisoned his
political opponents."

He was referring to Trudeau's decision to invoke the War Measures Act and round
up hundreds of Quebecers to deal with the 1970 October Crisis.
