Newark Airport Not Meeting Baggage-Screening Deadline
Newark Airport Not Meeting Baggage-Screening Deadline
News 12 New Jersey
(01/01/04) NEWARK - Baggage screening at Newark Liberty International Airport
still isn't up to federal standards.
According to The Star-Ledger, the airport still isn't electronically screening
all baggage for explosives. Officials say some of the baggage is still being
checked by hand and with dogs. The electronic equipment works by scanning the
bags' molecular structure.
The Transportation Security Administration wouldn't comment on the airport's
status. The Star-Ledger report cited an anonymous federal security official.
It's the second year the airport has missed the federal mandate. The airport
was among a dozen given extensions last year. The Port Authority, which
operates the airport, says it has taken steps to improve security.
United Flight 93, one of four jets hijacked by terrorists on September 11,
2001, took off from Newark airport.
