Passengers Total Soars At East Midlands Airport
Passengers Total Soars At Airport
Leicestershire Mail, UK
30 December 2003
Officials at East Midlands Airport say passenger numbers have gone up by more
than one million in the past year.
Latest figures show that 4.3million commuters and holiday makers have passed
through the Castle Donington airport so far this year.
In 2002, the number was 3.2million.
Airport bosses say the rise is down to the increased variety of destinations on
offer and an expansion of low-cost flights.
The Leicester Mercury revealed last week that East Midlands Airport was
expecting about 110,000 people to take off over the festive season - 11 per
cent up on last year's figure.
Despite the increase in passenger numbers, the Government has rejected plans
for a second runway at the airport.
However, airport bosses said this month that they were determined to go ahead
with the project.
They believe planes could be taking off from an expanded site by 2017.
