Ahmedabad Airport Gets a Facelift

AHMEDABAD: A special security set-up, comprising door-framed metal detector to
make security checks pleasant for passengers, was inaugurated at the domestic
terminal of the Sardar Patel Airport here on Saturday.
Also, a special lounge for its valued first class travellers was made available
by the Airports Authority of India.
Announcing this, airport director N M Jaldhari said, "This modern
passenger-friendly security system is a part of the ministry's plan to upgrade
all important airports of the country."
He said that the Ahmedabad airport will be equipped with more facilities for
the passengers. This facility will relieve the passengers from being subjected
to physical frisking as the new gadgets scan all objects on the body.
A lounge, c a l l e d Dwarka, for important v i s i t o r s was also
inaugurated by Union minister of state for home Harin Pathak.
The condition of the airport for which the officials have been drawing a lot of
flak is currently being improved by giving it a facelift.
The airport administration has been paying special emphasis on cleanliness and
upgrading the facilities for passengers.
The airport, on which Boeing 747s land, can accommodate around 14 aircraft on
its tarmac. But the passenger-handling facility at the arrival and departure
points at the airport is still not adequate.
Currently, the departure security check hall can accommodate just about 250
passengers.
The new terminal is expected to increase the capacity by almost five times.
Authorities hope that the new building would be operational in a few months'
time from now.
The airport director announced that the facility would be available at the
international terminal also. He said that a comprehensive work is on at the
moment for both the terminals.
Apart from passenger lounges, work is also on to provide better and organised
transportation facility to and from the airport.
