Newark Airport Gets Grant for Video Surveillance
1010 Wins, United States

(1010 WINS) (NEWARK) The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has received
$1.7 million in federal aid to install a video surveillance system to detect
and track people and vehicles that breach the perimeter at Newark Liberty
International Airport.

The surveillance system will assemble angles from different cameras to create a
single picture with an unrestricted view of affected areas.

The Transportation Security Administration funding comes as part of that
agency's efforts to bolster airport safety. Newark was one of eight airports
nationwide to receive money to improve security equipment.

The Port Authority will supplement the grant with its own funding from a
five-year, $500 million security-improvement program.

Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia said the surveillance equipment would be
a crucial addition to the airport's security.

Reps. Robert Menendez, Bill Pascrell Jr. and Donald Payne, all D-N.J., helped
secure the grant funding.

"By developing an effective monitoring system for the perimeter of the airport,
the Port Authority will take an important step in further protecting Newark
airport. Once the perimeters are secure, the next step should be to ensure that
all airport employees are screened, just as all passengers are screened,"
Pascrell told The Sunday Record of Bergen County.
