Air Wales Spreads Wings on New Routes
icWales, UK
FLIGHTS from Cardiff to Newcastle, Plymouth and Liverpool begin today, run by
Wales's only airline.
The new low-price routes are a direct challenge to crowded, delay-hit train
journeys and increasingly packed motorways.
The daily return flights to Liverpool will also provide an easy flight link
between North Wales and South Wales.
The new services represent another major expansion of routes by Air Wales.
Earlier this year, the company launched scheduled flights to London's City
Airport from Swansea and Cardiff.
The flight to the capital takes little more than a hour and is ideal for
business as City Airport is situated in the shadow of the Canary Wharf Tower
near central London.
The latest flight routes, priced at £29 one way (excluding tax) are the only
links from Wales by air to the North East, North West and the South West.
The chairman of Swansea-based Air Wales, Roy Thomas, said, "We are delighted to
be launching these important new services from Cardiff Airport.
"We have now increased our destination portfolio from Cardiff to seven, which
demonstrates our commitment to putting Wales on the map and developing air
links which will aid business and tourism in this country."
Cardiff International Airport's sales and marketing manager Vincent Rey said,
"The start-up of these services to the North-East at Newcastle and the
South-West at Plymouth is the beginning of an Air Wales hub at Cardiff
International Airport and will be welcomed by both business and leisure
travellers.
"Links to Liverpool will also offer easy and swift access to South Wales from
North Wales and vice versa as well as linking Liverpool and Cardiff with all of
the commercial and leisure opportunities this route will stimulate.
"All of these new routes will significantly improve communication and travel
times between these destinations which can only be beneficial to the local
economies of all, and it is the solution to those long and tedious road and
rail journeys." The new routes are part of a continued programme of expansion
for Air Wales, formed four and a half years ago.
It has launched several new services over the past 12 months. These include the
first London to Wales scheduled routes for more than 35 years, the first ever
Swansea to Amsterdam route and more recently, scheduled services between Wales
and Brussels.
The airline recently opened its own call centre in the middle of Swansea to
facilitate the increasing demand for the increasing flight and holiday services
it now offers.
The new flights to Amsterdam were launched last month and provide a link to
Schipohl Airport, a major international flight hub.
The Amsterdam route is also already proving popular as a short city break
holiday destination.
