Johor's Senai Airport to Extend Runway to Cater to Bigger Aircraft
Channel News Asia, Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia's Senai Airport in Johor will undergo an extensive
reconstruction to cater to more airlines operating from the state.

Senai Airport Terminal Services (SATS) will extend the airport runway by
another 400 metres to 3,800 metres to cater for larger and long-range
aircraft.

It will also build parallel taxiways to increase the airport runway
capacity, while carpark lots will be increased from 400 to 1,200.

Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, Diector of SATS Sdn Bhd, said fast growing
airlines such as Athena Air and AirAsia would bring additional revenue and
load to the terminal to make it truly a southern hub.

Athena Air Services, a regional passenger carrier, on Tuesday began
tri-weekly scheduled services between Senai Airport, Surabaya and Jakarta.

Athena Air chief executive, Jamaluddin Abdullah, said Senai Airport had
the potential to attract local and international passengers.

"Today, we are providing travellers from Indonesia direct access to
Malaysia's southern region with the option to visit Singapore via Senai at
a competitive price," he said.

He is confident of doubling the flight capacity within six months as Senai
has a huge potential.

The initial services are on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The carrier, jointly operated by Athena (M) Sdn Bhd and PT Indonesian
Airlines Avipatria, has a Boeing 727-232 aircraft with a 149-seating
capacity. - CNA
