Qatar Unveils Plans for New Airport
Travelbiz.com, Australia

Qatar Airways plans to build in Doha the first airport designed
specifically to accommodate the new A380-800 aircraft.

Work on the 2,200-hectare site, located to the east of the existing Doha
International Airport, will take place in three stages between 2004 and
2015.

Phase one, which will cost over USD2 billion, is scheduled for completion
by late 2008 or early 2009. It will include two new runways, a terminal
building, an airport hotel, 25,000 square metres of retail and lounge
facilities and a new Qatar Airways headquarters building.

The second phase will double the capacity of the terminal to handle 24
million passengers a year and the addition of a hotel for transit
passengers. The final phase will take the terminal building’s capacity to
50 million, making it comparable to Paris Charles de Gaulle and Dallas
Forth Worth.

Qatar Airways and Doha International Airport ceo Akbar Al Baker said Doha
sat beside the travel and transportation connections between the economic
powerhouses of the east of the consumers of the west.
