Detroit City Airport Won't Get $1 Million Grant
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Detroit City Airport won't get a $1 million federal grant it
requested to help revive passenger service, the U.S. Department of
Transportation said Thursday.

Muskegon County Airport, which received a $500,000 grant, was the only
Michigan airport to win one of this year's small community air development
grants. Airports in Kalamazoo, Lansing and Flint also were turned down.

City Airport wanted the grant to help lure Delta Air Lines to its
beleaguered facility, which hasn't had passenger service since 2000. The
airport promised to kick in $100,000 for marketing if it won the federal
grant.

There was some question whether City Airport would be eligible for the
grant, which is meant for airports in small communities.

Department of Transportation spokesman Bill Mosley said Thursday that the
department decided City Airport was eligible because it isn't a major
airport. But Mosley said competition for the grants was fierce. The
department received 170 applications and awarded 35 grants worth nearly
$20 million, he said.

City Airport administrator Delbert Brown didn't immediately return a phone
message Thursday.
