Airport Baggage Strike Called Off
BBC News, UK
A second 48-hour strike by baggage handlers at Heathrow Airport has been
called off after a new pay deal was accepted.
Union members who work for Swissport UK, which serves 20 airlines at the
west London airport, were due to walk out this weekend.
But the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) said on Wednesday it
had endorsed a deal and would be recommending acceptance by its members.
Some flights were cancelled during the last walk out on 4 November.
Brendan Gold, TGWU national officer, said a pay deal for this year,
backdated to January or April, had been agreed.
Talks about restructuring the company, which says it faces severe
problems, will be held separately.
Mr Gold added there will be job cuts, but Swissport has agreed there will
be no compulsory redundancies.
