Swat Team Storms Tower at Manila Airport

The New Zealand Herald

A Philippine Swat team has stormed the control tower at Manila Airport, killing two men to end a three-hour siege.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo played down concerns the siege was an attempt to undermine her Government ahead of elections next May, but said the military had been placed on full alert as a precaution.

The attackers, a former head of the Air Transport Office and his police bodyguard, were armed with handguns, a grenade and other explosives. Officials said the swat team stormed the tower on Saturday because there was a flight from the United States due before dawn.
