Hendricks County Airport Features Hangars and 4,400-foot Runway

Danville -- Nearly three decades in the planning, the new Hendricks County
Airport is complete with a runway suitable for twin-engine aircraft and
hangars for locally based planes.

The $12.5 million airport, two miles east of Danville and south of U.S.
36, is operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

The airport replaces the former Speedway Airport, which closed last year.
Indianapolis Airport Authority attorney Bob Duncan said Monday that the
old Speedway buildings will be demolished. After any environmental
problems are fixed, the 140-acre site will be sold.

The new Gordon Graham runway initially was planned to be 3,400 feet long,
but additional federal grant money was received, so a 4,400-foot runway
100 feet wide was completed, Duncan said.

The new airport includes 44 aircraft hangars, which are all leased and
filled with planes. The facility also includes a 34,000-square-foot
aircraft parking apron, a self-serve automated aircraft fueling system, a
temporary terminal building and a paved road and parking lot.

The Federal Aviation Administration provided grants totaling $7.7 million.
State funds totaled $675,000, and the Airport Authority spent $4.1
million.
