Largest airport terminal in NW China put into operation
China - Xinhua
The new terminal of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, the largest and
most advanced airport in northwestern China, went into operation Thursday.
With a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan (181 million US dollars), the
work on the airport's expansion began in 2000, including a terminal of
80,000 square meters, an apron of 240,000 square meters, a parking lot of
38,000 square meters, and water, electricity and heat supply and other
infrastructure facilities.
The airport went into operation in 1991, with a designed capacity of
handling two million passengers annually. But the capacity has been failed
to meet demand for almost 10 years with the rapid economic development in
the region.
The airport now is capable of handling 10 million passengers and 130,000
tons of cargo annually.
