Vote possible on airport resolution
Members expect rezoning support
By David Klepper
The Myrtle Beach (FL) Sun News
Horry County Council could finally vote Tuesday on a resolution affirming a
plan to build a new airport terminal in Myrtle Beach.
After months of debate about the need for a new $185 million terminal at
Myrtle Beach International Airport, most council members say they support
the plan. The proposal was first approved years ago, and planning is already
under way. Construction is expected to begin in 2005.
The resolution also would cap the county's share of the terminal cost at $70
million and call for discussions about the feasibility of a future regional
airport that could serve the Grand Strand, the Pee Dee and Wilmington, N.C.
The resolution has been rewritten several times and delayed for public
input. But council members said they expect to pass it tonight.
The council also will likely take up the proposed Hard Rock Park rezoning.
The developers will present their plans before the council takes its first
vote on the rezoning request, which requires three votes before being
approved. The $200 million, 142-acre rock 'n' roll-themed Hard Rock Park
would feature rides and attractions, plus an outdoor concert venue with room
for 15,000 people. Organizers say they hope to open the park in 2005.
The rezoning would change land regulations to allow for park plans to go
forward.
A public presentation is uncommon for a first vote, but Council Chairwoman
Liz Gilland said it is needed to dispel concerns that the park would add
traffic and noise to Fantasy Harbour.
"I want people to know as much about the plan as council members do," she
said. "A lot of the fears and concerns will go away right there."
