Suspicious Item Prompts Brief Evacuation of LAX Terminal
KABC-TV Ch 7 ABC, Los Angeles (CA)

LOS ANGELES — The international terminal of Los Angeles International
Airport was evacuated briefly Tuesday after the discovery of a suspicious
package, which turned out to be harmless.

The suspicious item was reported at 2:50 p.m. in the lower-level, U.S.
Customs area of Tom Bradley International Terminal, prompting a 40-minute
evacuation of about 1,500 arriving passengers, said airport spokeswoman Gaby
Pacheco.

A bomb squad determined the package did not contain explosives, said Officer
Jason Lee, a police spokesman.

The terminal reopened about 3:30 p.m., Pacheco said.

Two planes, British Airways and Mexicana, were held at their gates and
passengers kept aboard until the terminal reopened.

Departing flights were not affected by the closure, Pacheco said.
