Charlotte TSA Director Stepping Down
WSOC-TV Ch 9, Charlotte (NC)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte director of the Transportation Security
Administration, Manilito Garabato, has resigned.
Garabato was in charge of hiring more than 500 federal employees and
training them to handle security checkpoints at Charlotte Douglas
International Airport.
The TSA officially took over in November and has generally gotten
compliments for their work in Charlotte.
But Garabato's brief tenure was not without its controversy.
Garabato was at the helm in January when Eyewitness News obtained a copy of
a TSA memo detailing several failures in the security system.
At the same time, several TSA employees came to Eyewitness News with
complaints about working conditions and specifically, Garabato's management
style.
Three months later, Eyewitness News learned Garabato disciplined at least
three of the screeners for not cooperating with TSA's internal investigation
of the leaks.
Two were later laid off when the TSA cut back positions.
