Airliners Fullest Since 1970
The Washington (DC) Post
U.S. airliners in the past two months were the most crowded in 30 years,
mainly because the carriers have parked more than 600 aircraft in an effort
to reduce costs in response to a decline in demand. Planes of the biggest
carriers were on average 82 percent full in July, the highest level since
1970, when the Air Transport Association began recording the statistic. In
June, aircraft were 80 percent full on average. Seat capacity of the top 10
U.S. carriers was down 6 percent in July from a year earlier and 10 percent
lower than July 2000.
