Krakow to Open Terminal for Low-Cost Carriers
Polish News Bulletin

The local authorities in Krakow, in co-operation with the Army Property
Agency (AMW), want to offer a special airport terminal in Balice for
low-cost carriers, such as Ryanair and EasyJet. To date those carriers could
not enter the Polish market, because the majority of airports in Poland have
been controlled by the state company PPL, the Polish State Airports, which
charges very high airport fees. However, yesterday the minister of national
defence Jerzy Szmajdzinski gave the Krakow city a plot of land in Balice,
formerly administered by the Army Property Agency. The army cannot donate
land or real estate directly to the city or the provincial authorities, thus
the intermediary of AMW, said the defence ministry spokesman. "This way we
have removed the last obstacle to lure the low-cost airlines to us. We want
to offer them our own airport terminal before the next summer holidays,"
said Jacek Majchrowski, the president of Krakow city.
