Des Moines Airport To Cater To Smaller Planes
Airport Plans $350,000 In Renovations
Iowa Channel.com

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Des Moines Airport is planning $350,000 in
renovations to accommodate the growing use of smaller planes.

Most passengers at the airport currently board planes from the second level
of the terminal using mobile bridges that are guided to aircraft hatches.
But, the bridges can't be lowered to fit smaller aircraft, so passengers
have to board from the ground level after walking across the tarmac.

Airport officials plan to fix the problem by installing a new waiting area
on the ground level of the concourse. Officials said the change comes as
more airlines are using small turboprop aircraft or regional jets to cut
costs.

About a dozen daily flights out of Des Moines are on smaller planes.

Airport officials also reported a 3 percent increase in passengers for the
first six months of 2003 over the same period of time for 2002.
