Senai Airport keen to learn from Dubai Cargo Village
Bernama
SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) wants to learn from and tap
into the expertise of Dubai Cargo Village (DCV), West Asia's premier cargo
hub, as it is keen to transform Johor's Senai Airport into Asia's logistics
hub in the next few years.
SATS, which is set to take over the operations of the Sultan Ismail
International Airport in Senai, said in a statement that its management team
had recently visited DCV, Dubai International Airport and Dubai Airport Free
Zone.
Project coordinator Mohamad Bustami Yahaya, who led the team, said: "We were
impressed with the way DCV manages and facilitates movement of air cargo and
freight."
He said streamlined systems and smooth processing which ensured timely and
cost-effective movement of cargo were critical if Senai Airport were to
become a cargo hub.
"This is our top priority and even though we have not formalised anything at
this point, Senai Airport hopes to mirror DCV. That, coupled with DCV's many
achievements over the years, has made it one of the most advanced air cargo
terminals in the world," he said.
Another key area at DCV which impressed SATS is the revolutionary practice
of bringing together all cargo-related agencies into one compound to
minimise cargo handling time, from government authorities such as aviation,
customs, health, information to security, airlines and handling agents.
DCV manager (business development and customer relations) Shyam C. Bhatia
said: "We have been in operation for over 10 years and have the experience
to share our expertise."
He said Senai Airport's strategic location in Asia would give it a
tremendous advantage to succeed as a cargo and logistics hub, just like
Dubai, which was not only uniquely located at the Persian Gulf but had been
a strategic trading post for more than 15 centuries.
