Asa calls for airport expansion expressions of interest
Business News Americas
Mexican airport operator Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (Asa) is calling
for expressions of interest for a terminal expansion in capital Mexico
City's international airport, El Financiero reported.
Works will cost some 32mn pesos (US$3mn) and will involve expanding the
terminal to 22 sq. m from the current 18 sq. m. Expressions of interest will
be due August 13 and the some four-month works are slated to begin September
8.
Asa will invest some 300mn pesos (US$28mn) in total to initiate expansion
works of capital Mexico City's international airport (AICM) to provide
better & expanded services for 10-12 years, BNamericas previously reported.
The funds are part of the Asa's budget and works are expected to be
completed by end-2005. Works will include access roadways, drainage systems
and terminal expansions.
The government predicts the airport will handle some 700,000 flights/year
after the expansion works are complete, nearly double the current capacity.
International consulting firm AT Kearney advised Mexico's government in June
that expansion of Mexico City's international airport (AICM) is a "risky,
costly, and an infeasible" option, warning that the increase of activities
will cause oversaturation in the near future and the government will again
be forced to reconsider building a new airport.
A site for a new airport had been chosen at Texcoco, in neighboring Mexico
state, but was shelved late last year after violent protests from locals.
