FAA says Indianapolis has a 'perfect' airport
By Gus Pearcy
The Plainfield (IN) Flyer Group
INDIANAPOLIS -- In the eyes of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),
Indianapolis International Airport is perfect. The FAA cited no
discrepancies in an annual inspection.
FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergin confirms the airport received no
discrepancies on the Part 139 certification inspection which is done to all
429 air carrier airports. The inspection focuses on safety and maintenance
requirements including fire department response time, runway taxiway
markings and lighting and general airfield condition, she explained.
A normal inspection takes a full two days, Bergin added.
"One of the things they pull is a fire run and time," airport spokesman
Dennis Rosebrough said. "Under the certification rules, you have X period of
time from the firehouse to the farthest point on a runway."
Rosebrough said having no discrepancies is a significant accomplishment. The
airport here has received four "perfect" inspections in a row, he said.
"To get this four times in a row is a real tribute to our guys out there on
the airfield whose job it is to keep the airfield in tip-top shape," he
said. "That doesn't happen by chance. That's a dedicated effort and a
focus."
Indianapolis International Airport is managed by BAA, a company based in
London that operates 19 airports. Some are owned by the company which began
as the British Airport Authority. Indianapolis is the only airport that the
company manages totally.
The airport is racking up awards lately, Rosebrough said. It was recently
honored by the International Aviation Snow Symposium for excellence in snow
and ice control during last winter and Indianapolis Airport Director David
Roberts was recognized for proactive airport management that promotes runway
safety.
