American Looks to Add Flights at Hub Airports
The Fort Worth (TX) Star-Telegram
American Airlines will modestly boost its remaining hubs this fall as it
pares its St. Louis operation. Dallas/Fort Worth Airport will gain 27 daily
flights.
But the carrier's total operation this fall will be down 8 percent in size
Nov. 1, compared with July, airline executives said Wednesday.
"We are realigning schedules at our midcontinent hubs and adding service in
selected markets where we foresee customer demand for additional flights,"
Dan Garton, American's executive vice president of marketing, said in a
prepared statement.
American announced earlier this month that it was cutting its St. Louis hub
dramatically, slashing about 200 of the 400 flights scheduled at that
airport.
The Fort Worth-based carrier said it will add the hub flights beginning Nov.
1. In addition to D/FW, the carrier will add 19 flights at O'Hare
International Airport in Chicago and seven flights at Miami International
Airport.
The carrier also plans to add nonhub flights, including routes from Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It also is adding a
flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Caracas, Venezuela.
American is in the midst of a campaign to slash $4 billion in annual costs.
In addition to cutting flights, the airline negotiated $1.6 billion in
savings from unionized employees, and another $175 million from vendors.
