Design of Terminal at Atlanta Airport Gives Foreign Visitors Skyline View
The Atlanta (GA) Journal-Constitution
Foreign visitors to Atlanta will get a glimpse of the city's skyline even
more as they leave the airport, according to the design team working on the
new international terminal at Hartsfield International Airport.
The team led by the architecture firm Leo A. Daly has done a preliminary
design for the terminal, which is expected to open in 2006 next to the
international concourse that opened in 1994. It is part of Hartsfield's
expansion plan that includes a fifth runway.
A total of 30 architects are working on the design, with help from another
24 professionals, including structural engineers and electrical engineers,
said Keith Mawson of Leo A. Daly, the chairman of the joint venture project.
In addition to the skyline view, the new terminal will feature artwork
incorporated into the walls, such as built-in sculptures or murals, said Kap
Malik, one of the project's lead design architects. Malik is with the
architecture firm Gensler, which has worked on terminals at more than two
dozen airports around the world.
Airports in San Diego, Austin and Reagan National in Washington, D.C., also
have incorporated artwork into the initial design of terminals. At
Hartsfield, some of the sites for artwork will be for Georgia artists only,
he said.
The terminal also will feature materials and colors of Georgia, such as
local granite on the floors and a red sandstone wall in the terminal's
interior that will evoke the state's red clay.
There also will be a 40-foot wall with changing advertising displays and a
stage for live music in the area near the restaurants and shops.
The new terminal will connect to the existing 28-gate international
concourse for a total of 38 international gates. Perhaps most importantly
for customers, the new terminal will eliminate the baggage recheck process
for arriving Atlanta passengers.
Additionally, there will be a new 1,100-space parking structure, as well as
new terminal access from the east side of the airport via Interstate 75.
