U.S. allots $56 million for Sea-Tac Airport security
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The federal government is spending more than $56 million this year for
security, runway and noise mitigation at Sea-Tac Airport, Sen. Patty Murray
said yesterday

The money, from the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement
Program, includes $33.7 million to support modifications to the
baggage-screening area to accommodate new explosive-detection machines.

It also includes more than $12 million toward construction of a third runway
and about $10.3 million for noise mitigation. The mitigation money includes
$5.3 million for additional land purchases and about $5 million for
sound-proofing and other measures at schools in the Highline District.

The money was included in the current federal transportation appropriations
bill, at Murray's request, and will be available "in a matter of weeks,"
Murray spokesman Todd Webster said.
