Filner backs airport idea
The Imperial Valley (CA) Press
Congressman Bob Filner, D- San Diego, is encouraging the San Diego
California Regional Airport Authority to consider the benefits of an airport
in Imperial County.
Filner included language to consider Imperial County as an alternative
airport site in an aviation bill that funds the FAA and governs aviation
policy, a press release states.
"This is only our first step — and it is a small step," Filner said in the
press release. "But it represents a significant accomplishment. Republicans
and Democrats have agreed that Imperial Valley should be seriously
considered as a location for an international airport."
Congress appropriated $1.5 million in 2001 for the San Diego Regional
Airport Authority to conduct a transportation study. The study includes
finding a location for a new airport.
"An international airport would be an incredible opportunity for the
Valley's economy and the Valley's families."
