Phoenix Sky Harbor International Returns to Three Runways
Press Release

PHOENIX, /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport's Center
Runway reopened on Tuesday, March 25 after a 77 day closure during the
conversion from asphalt to concrete.

Unlike the old asphalt surface, which required major repairs every 7-10
years, the new 18-inch concrete surface will require major repairs only
every 20-30 years. Concrete is better suited to the desert heat and is the
surface used on both the North and South Runways at Sky Harbor. The new
surface will mean less spending on maintenance, less construction-related
air emissions and fewer delays for travelers.

The reconstruction of the Center Runway was part of a five-year airfield
improvement program which also included an extension of the North Runway
from 11,001 to 11,490 feet, creation of a 7,800 foot 3rd runway, and taxiway
and lighting improvements. The Center Runway project did not add length or
capacity.

The $68 million runway resurfacing project was funded entirely by airport
users and federal grant monies. No local tax dollars were used.

There are three runways at Phoenix Sky Harbor:
North Runway 8L/26R is 11,490 feet long x 150 feet
Center Runway 8R/26L is 10,300 feet long x 150 feet
South Runway 7R/25L is 7,800 feet long x 150 feet

Conveniently located in the heart of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area,
Sky Harbor ranks as the 5th busiest U.S. airport for aircraft operations;
6th busiest U.S. airport for passenger traffic; and 11th busiest airport in
the world for passenger traffic for 2001. Offering an average of 1,600 daily
commercial airline flights, Sky Harbor serves 105 cities with non- stop
flights, including non-stop destinations in the UK, Germany, Mexico and
Canada. Phoenix Sky Harbor airport boasts more than 350 perfect flying days
per year. For more information about Phoenix Sky Harbor International
