Expanded Haneda Airport To Bring Y1.2tln Econ Benefits
Japan - Nihon Keizai Shimbun

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Chikage Ogi
on Tuesday evening will ask seven prefectural governors in the Tokyo area to
share the costs of the planned project to expand the Tokyo International
Airport at Haneda, ministry sources said the same day.

The ministry claims the scheme will produce economic benefits worth some 1.2
trillion yen in and around the nation's capital.

This estimate will serve as the basis for calculating the sum each
prefecture will be asked to pay toward funding the project.

The planned airport expansion will build a fourth runway and increase the
number of total flights by 50%. The airport is now used predominantly for
domestic flights, but the project is expected to allow airlines to
inaugurate more international flights.

Of the estimated 1.2 trillion yen in benefits, additional revenues for
airlines, restaurant operators and other related businesses will account for
600 billion yen and the remaining 600 billion yen is expected to go to other
industries, which will indirectly benefit from the airport expansion.

The cost-sharing request will be made at this evening's meeting to be
attended by Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara and governors from six other
surrounding prefectures.
