Indiana airport director to head Rickenbacker
Columbus (OH) Business First
Charles Goodwin, director of the Terre Haute International Airport in
Indiana, will become general manager of Rickenbacker International Airport,
the Columbus Regional Airport Authority said Monday.
Goodwin will start his job in April and become the airport's first full-time
director since Rickenbacker was merged into the authority with Port Columbus
International Airport and Bolton Field at the end of 2003.
He will replace Mark Mulcahey, who normally serves as manager of Bolton
Field.
Rickenbacker's last operations manager was Robert Selig, who left late last
year before the airport merger was completed.
Goodwin will be responsible for day-to-day control of the airport,
coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration to enhance airport
security, assisting tenants and acting as a community liaison.
He was unavailable for comment Monday.
"Charlie's excellent background in airport management, coupled with his
experience in the cargo industry, makes him a natural for this position,"
said Elaine Roberts, president and chief executive of the airport authority.
Cargo operations experience is needed at Rickenbacker, an airport south of
Columbus that handled more than 184 million pounds of cargo in 2002.
Rickenbacker also spurs development in the area by extending its foreign
trade zone, a duty-free area, to manufacturers and warehouses.
The Terre Haute airport also operates a foreign trade zone, according to its
Web site.
Goodwin headed the Terre Haute airport for 13 years, following a stint as
project manager and aviation planner for R.W. Armstrong & Associates, an
airport consulting firm in Indianapolis. He has also served as a supervisor
for Evergreen International Airlines and operations manager with the
Indianapolis Airport Authority.
His aviation career began as an air crewman in Navy. He holds a bachelor's
degree from Indiana State University and a private pilot's certificate.
Rickenbacker was operated independently until Dec. 12, when the Rickenbacker
Port Authority was combined with the Columbus Municipal Port Authority,
which oversaw Port Columbus and Bolton Field. The combined authority
coordinates long-range planning among the three airports so they can be
operated more efficiently.
